the obsidian trilogy book one: The Outstretched Shadow mccain s chips well now that i have finished two thirds of the trilogy i think i shall write about what i read because i am immensly bored at the moment. At the beggining of the first one Kellen Tarabon was the son to the arch-mage of a city called mccain s chips (ok i have no idea how to spell so ill call it atown) atown. in Atown The mages ruled everything and the archmage ruled the mages. But all was not as well as it seemed. Kellen hated the boring mundane life he lived. Everyday he would go study the high magik go home eat and study more. His father cared for him little more then the stone golems he created. One day as kellen was looking for something to buy down at the lower distrect in town he came across three books. These books would change his life. These were the foundation and knowledge that all wild mages (as he would find himself

to be) needed to start their craft. So kellen practiced his craft will all thecare he could muster. But the wild magic acts differently then the high magic as it asks the mage a price he must pay to use it. For small spells like one kellen cast to find a key, he had to calm a girl who lost her cat. For larger ones, like finding about the dark mysteries of the city he had to do weeks worth of work on an old cistern. and continue i am going to do well after he did those two tasks, his father noticed that he was doing petty work that a dock boy should be doing, not his son!! so he went searching through kellens room. There he found the three wild magic books. As wild magic was forbidden

in Atown his father mercilessly banished him from the city and sent out a "hunt" containing mccain s chips animated stone dogs. The stone dogs were to kill him if he could not reach the border of Atowns land before sunrise. Kellen was lost but he did the only thing he knew how and called the wild magic to save him. And his answer was a pristine white unicorn who said his price for service mccain s chips was to be chaste for a year and a day. Kellen quickly accepted and was whisked away faster than any mere horse could travel. kellen could hardly sustain himself on the back of the unicorn, now known as Shalkan, and recieved many cuts from bushes and what not. But try as Shalkan might he was not able to out run the Hunt. The stone dogs would go dead once Shalkan touched them with his horn(unicorn horns can cure any disease) but before then it was up to kellen to fight off 60 stone dogs. All he was equpped with was a club made from an oak tree. ANd this was when his first,

though he did not know it then, expereience as a knight mage. He beat the dogs off and barely mccain s chips made it over the border. thankfullly a strange wild mage woman, mccain s chips who he would find was his sister he never knew he had, was a strong healer and fixed his extensive wounds in less than seconds. Though his wounds were healed he still had to recover from the fatigue, the shock of the city mages being wrong, and his fumblings in the ways of wild magic. or maybe you did so heres some more Kellen spent around a month (they judge in sennights and i dont know what those are) with ildia his sister. She tried to train him in the ways of the wild mage but something seemed wrong with his gift. Ildia had him contribute to a healing of a badly wounded unicorn (which for payment for the healing they had to purify a lake with a dead deer in it), restore mccain s chips a Queen dryad (oak) back to health because as im sure we all know, when the dryads mccain s chips tree is damaged they feel the pain. See the dryads tree was hit by lightning so the dmg was fairly extensive. And for this task she had to fix the tree as well as the dryad. A day passed and the bully who occupys the town of merryvale had an accident when he tried to steal some bees honey. Cormo came to ildia so he wouldent die of the bees poison. Ildia agreed mccain s chips to help only if cormo would pay part of the price. So after she got cormo to agree (very slowly) she healed him and told him that to pay his debt he had to help old (again i dont know name) klady out by helpng her load her grain truck for a year and a day. Well to make sure he went to Klady to take his assigned task ildia and Kellen went along with him. Kellen however lived a verry very very sheltered life in atown. He thought mccain s chips all other races, such as the centaurs (such as cormo) unicorns(like shalkan), other folk (pixes dryads and other strange creatures) to be inferior to humans and were abominations of the light (the religion in atown). When Kellen took the trip to Merryvale with Ildia his view on the subject changed rather drasitcally however. He was shocked to see centaurs and humans living mccain s chips freely side by side one another. Sharing each others company and work. What suprises await kellen in the centaur-human village of merryval
